Service Description

PLEASE NOTE: This is a four-session course: ONLY SIGN UP ON THE FIRST SESSION FOR THIS COURSE -- You will be enrolled in all four dates. Sessions will take place on TUESDAYS, January 21st and 28th, and FEBRUARY 4th and 11th, 5:30 - 8:30 pm. OVERVIEW: This four-session class is an introduction into the centuries-old art of Stained Glass! This course will focus on the Tiffany Copper Foil technique. Topics to be covered will include: * Safety -- handling of glass and chemicals -- protecting hands, skin, eyes, clothing, etc * Patterns -- planning your project in advance * Cutting glass -- glass properties -- using cutting tools, proper methods, choices -- grinding/grozing/fitting * Foiling * Soldering -- proper handling and use of flux -- proper solders for stained glass -- soldering irons, handling, safety; cleaning * Finishing -- cleaning off flux, adding patina, polishing * Troubleshooting -- repairs; glass; soldering AGE MINIMUM: 16 years (Minors must be accompanied by an adult.) PRICE INCLUDES: All tools and materials (glass, solder, flux, etc.) will be provided for use while in the studio, and during open studio hours while a student of this course. Aprons, gloves and masks will be available for use; handouts of helpful terms and best practices will be provided. SAFETY: Students are advised to wear sturdy pants (jeans) and shoes (no open toes/sandals), and long sleeved shirts. Jewelry is discouraged and long hair must be tied back. There is the risk of skin cuts and slight burns (heat, mild acid) so “work-type” clothes are advised. PREREQUISITES: No experience necessary. STUDENTS SHOULD BRING: Notebook if desired - some handouts will be available to write on.

PAYMENT POLICY: - Payment is due in full at the time of booking to guarantee your spot in any class. - Be sure to check the class description for any requirements, such as minimum age, prerequisites, and/or supplies that you need to bring with you to class. - Sign-ups close one calendar day prior to class to allow for instructor preparations, possible cancellation, etc. CANCELLATION/RE-SCHEDULE POLICY: - If a student cancels, Birch must be notified at least 24 hours prior to the class in order to give a full refund. If less than 24 hours, 50% will be refunded. If a student has an emergency cancellation and Birch is informed ASAP prior to class, student will receive a full credit towards a future class if some proof can be provided. - If the class is cancelled due to not enough sign-ups or an instructor emergency, students will be advised by phone or text ASAP, and all will receive a full refund. - No-call, no-shows for classes will not receive a refund OR credit. MISSING A SESSION OF A MULTI-SESSION CLASS: - If a class takes place over 2 or more sessions, it can be difficult to keep up with your project if you miss a session. Reach out to your instructor to see if there is an opportunity to join another class for the missed part, or if you can get assistance at an “Open Studio” time.
